Book Your TreatmentWhat Is TMJ Dysfunction?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jawbone to your skull on each side of your face. When the muscles, ligaments, or disc within this joint are unbalanced, it can produce a range of symptoms collectively known as temporomandibular disorder (TMD). TMD is a common source of facial pain that can affect people at various stages of life, however most commonly affecting women between the ages of 20-40.
TMJ dysfunction often presents as pain or tenderness around the jaw, difficulty opening or closing your mouth, a clicking or popping sound during jaw movement, and pain into the ear, temples, or neck. Many people also experience headaches, tooth sensitivity, or a feeling of their bite being misaligned.
Because the jaw muscles are deeply connected to the muscles of the neck, head, and upper back, TMJ issues rarely exist in isolation. This tension within the body can create a cycle of compensation and pain where jaw issues and posture feed into each other and impact your day to day comfort.
Common Causes of Jaw Pain
TMJ dysfunction can develop gradually or be caused by a specific event. Understanding the contributing factors helps guide more effective treatment.
-
Bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching) — often stress-related, this places chronic overload on the jaw muscles and joint.
-
Stress and emotional tension — the jaw is an area where stress manifests physically, leading to habitual clenching throughout the day.
-
Poor posture and forward head carriage — prolonged desk work or screen use shifts the head forward, increasing tension through the neck and jaw.
-
Dental work or bite irregularities — recent procedures or malocclusion can alter jaw mechanics and contribute to muscular strain.
-
Trauma or injury — an impact to the face, whiplash, or even prolonged mouth-open procedures can trigger TMJ issues.
How We Treat TMJ
Myotherapy is particularly effective for jaw pain because it directly addresses the muscular component that can cause it. Your experienced therapist uses a combination of techniques specifically selected for the complex musculature of the jaw and surrounding areas.
Treatment typically involves targeted manual therapy techniques selected based on your individual assessment. Intraoral release techniques may be used where appropriate, allowing direct access to deeper muscles that cannot be reached externally. Dry needling to the jaw, neck and shoulder muscles may also be used.
Your therapist will also apply trigger point and deep tissue work through the neck and shoulder area, where tension often builds in response to jaw tension.
Beyond hands-on treatment, your therapist will provide self-care strategies to help improve treatment outcomes.
What to Expect in Your Session
Your first appointment begins with an assessment of your jaw movement, posture, and symptom history. This gives your therapist a deeper understanding to tailor a treatment plan based on your presentation before beginning any hands-on work.
Your therapist will make sure you're comfortable throughout the session, adjusting techniques and pressure as needed. The jaw area can be quite sensitive, especially if it hasn't received much treatment before. Results vary from person to person however most find the first session the strongest, with follow-ups feeling noticeably less intense — a positive sign that tension has eased.
Every session is individually tailored. Your therapist will assess your specific needs and develop a treatment plan suited to you.
