A hands-on technique using suction cups to help release muscle tension, increase blood flow, and promote recovery at our Collins Street clinic in Melbourne CBD.
Book Your TreatmentABOUT THE TECHNIQUE
What is cupping therapy?
Cupping therapy involves placing suction cups on the skin to gently lift the underlying tissue. This lifting action can help loosen tight muscles, improve circulation to the area, and support the body's natural healing process. It is a technique that has been used for centuries and remains a valued part of modern manual therapy.
At Flow State Therapies, we use myofascial cupping — a contemporary approach where cups may be combined with active movement to address areas of restriction more effectively. Rather than being used in isolation, cupping is typically integrated into your broader treatment plan alongside other techniques such as deep tissue work, dry needling, or joint mobilisation.
Your therapist will always explain the technique, discuss what to expect, and obtain your consent before cupping is used in any session.
CONDITIONS
What cupping can help with
Cupping may be used as part of your treatment when your therapist identifies areas of muscle tension, fascial restriction, or reduced circulation. It can complement a range of conditions and treatment approaches.
Neck & Shoulder Tension
May help ease tightness through the upper back, neck, and shoulders.
Lower Back Pain
Can assist with muscular tension and stiffness in the lower back region.
Sports Recovery
May support post-training recovery and help reduce delayed onset muscle soreness.
Myotherapy
Often used as part of a broader myotherapy treatment plan for musculoskeletal conditions.
Remedial Massage
Can complement remedial massage techniques for deeper tissue release.
YOUR EXPERIENCE
What to expect
During cupping, you may feel a gentle pulling or tightening sensation as the cups create suction on the skin. Most people find it comfortable, and your therapist will check in with you throughout to ensure the pressure feels right. If at any point you would like the cups adjusted or removed, your therapist will do so immediately.
It is normal for temporary marks to appear on the skin after cupping. These circular marks are not bruises — they are a result of increased blood flow to the area and typically fade within a few days. Your therapist will explain this before treatment begins and will always proceed with your consent.
After your session, staying well hydrated and avoiding intense exercise for the rest of the day can help support your body's response to treatment. Your therapist will provide any specific aftercare guidance relevant to your session.
Every session is individually tailored based on your needs and what your body presents with on the day.
Cupping is included as part of your myotherapy or remedial massage session when clinically appropriate — there's no additional cost.
