Everything you need to know about myotherapy, booking, pricing, and what to expect at Flow State Therapies.
Myotherapy is a branch of manual medicine focused on the assessment, treatment, and management of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. It goes beyond general massage by incorporating evidence-based techniques such as dry needling, myofascial release, joint mobilisation, cupping, and corrective exercise to address the root cause of your pain, not just the symptoms.
While both disciplines use hands-on techniques, myotherapy includes a broader scope of practice. A myotherapist conducts a full musculoskeletal assessment, uses advanced techniques like dry needling and joint mobilisation, and creates tailored treatment plans with home exercise prescriptions. Remedial massage focuses primarily on soft tissue manipulation. At Flow State Therapies, all sessions are delivered with a myotherapy-informed approach regardless of the service you book.
No referral is needed to see a myotherapist. You can book directly with us at any time. However, we are happy to work alongside your GP, physiotherapist, osteopath, or specialist as part of a collaborative care approach. If you have been referred by another practitioner, please let us know so we can coordinate your treatment.
Yes. As a registered member of Massage & Myotherapy Australia, our therapist is a recognised provider with all major Australian health funds. You can claim rebates for myotherapy and remedial massage using your extras cover. HICAPS is available on-site for instant claims. Rebate amounts vary depending on your fund and level of cover.
We offer three session lengths: 30 minutes ($80) for targeted treatment of a specific area, 45 minutes ($110) as our standard session for most conditions, and 60 minutes ($140) for comprehensive treatment addressing multiple areas or complex conditions. If you are unsure which to choose, 45 minutes is a great starting point.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows access to the area being treated. For lower body treatments, shorts are helpful. Towels and sheets are always provided for draping, and your comfort and privacy are a priority throughout the session.
Some techniques may involve mild to moderate discomfort, particularly when working on tight or tender areas. However, treatment is always kept within your tolerance and you are encouraged to communicate throughout the session. Your therapist adjusts the approach based on your feedback to ensure you feel safe and comfortable.
This depends on your condition, how long you have had it, and your treatment goals. Acute issues may resolve in one to three sessions, while chronic or complex conditions typically benefit from three to six sessions for meaningful, lasting change. Your therapist will discuss a recommended treatment plan after your initial assessment, and progress is reviewed at every visit.
Dry needling is a technique using fine, single-use needles inserted into trigger points to help release muscle tension and reduce pain. It's performed as part of a myotherapy or remedial massage session when clinically appropriate, and always with your consent. There's no additional cost.
Cupping uses suction cups placed on the skin to help release tight muscles, increase blood flow, and support recovery. Like dry needling, it's included as part of your session when your therapist considers it beneficial. Temporary marks may appear on the skin, which typically fade within a few days.
Remedial massage is a targeted form of massage therapy focused on treating specific musculoskeletal issues — rather than general relaxation. Your therapist assesses your movement, posture, and areas of concern to deliver a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
