Pregnancy Support & Prenatal Care
Pregnancy places extraordinary demands on your body. Prenatal myotherapy provides safe, nurturing relief for the muscular discomforts that accompany each stage — helping you feel more comfortable, supported, and at ease throughout your pregnancy.
Book Your TreatmentWhy Your Body Changes During Pregnancy
As your baby grows, your body undergoes significant postural and hormonal changes. The increased weight at the front of your body shifts your centre of gravity, increasing the curve in your lower back and placing additional load on muscles that may already be working hard. The hormone relaxin loosens ligaments throughout the body, which supports the birthing process but can also reduce joint stability and contribute to muscular strain.
These changes are entirely normal, but they can produce very real discomfort. Lower back pain, pelvic girdle discomfort, hip tightness, upper back and rib tension, and swelling in the legs and feet are among the most common complaints during pregnancy. Many women also experience headaches and neck tension, particularly in the first and third trimesters.
Myotherapy during pregnancy is focused on supporting your body through these changes — reducing muscular tension, improving comfort, and helping you maintain mobility and wellbeing as your pregnancy progresses.
Pregnancy-Related Muscular Issues
The physical changes of pregnancy create a range of muscular discomforts that can respond well to gentle, skilled treatment:
-
Lower back pain — the most common pregnancy complaint, caused by increased lumbar lordosis and the additional weight carried at the front of the body.
-
Pelvic girdle and sacroiliac pain — ligament laxity and shifting pelvic alignment can create pain at the front or back of the pelvis, particularly when walking or rolling in bed.
-
Hip tightness and sciatic pain — the deep hip muscles can tighten as the pelvis adapts, sometimes compressing the sciatic nerve.
-
Upper back and rib tension — as the uterus expands, the rib cage is pushed outward and the thoracic spine stiffens, particularly in the third trimester.
-
Neck and shoulder tension — postural changes and the anticipation of breastfeeding and baby care can increase upper body tension.
-
Leg swelling and calf tightness — fluid retention and reduced circulation in the lower limbs are common, particularly in later pregnancy.
Safe, Specialised Prenatal Myotherapy
Our team has over 10 years of clinical experience and is trained in prenatal treatment protocols. Your therapist understands the specific considerations for each trimester and adapts techniques to ensure both safety and effectiveness throughout your pregnancy.
Treatment uses comfortable side-lying and supported positioning — no lying face-down on a pregnancy pillow with a hole. This approach is safer and more comfortable, allowing your therapist to effectively treat the lower back, hips, and shoulders without any pressure on your abdomen.
Techniques are gentle but effective and may include myofascial release to ease tension through the lower back and hips, targeted massage to the gluteals and hip rotators, gentle stretching for the thoracic spine and shoulders, and soothing work through the legs and feet to address swelling and tightness. Dry needling is not used during pregnancy, and all techniques are selected with your safety as the first priority.
Your therapist also provides guidance on sleeping positions, gentle stretches you can do at home, and strategies for managing discomfort as your body continues to change. Your therapist will discuss expected outcomes and a recommended treatment plan during your session.
What to Expect in Your Session
Your first session begins with a conversation about your pregnancy stage, any specific discomforts, and your overall health. Your therapist will explain the treatment plan and positioning before any hands-on work begins, so you feel informed and comfortable throughout.
Treatment is nurturing and calm. The pace is unhurried, the pressure is appropriate for pregnancy, and your therapist checks in regularly to ensure you are comfortable.
Appointments are available Monday and Wednesday at our Melbourne CBD clinic. Health fund rebates apply for remedial massage and myotherapy under most major funds with extras cover. Prenatal treatment is suitable from the second trimester onward; please consult your care provider if you have any specific medical concerns.
Every session is individually tailored. Your therapist will assess your specific needs and develop a treatment plan suited to you.
